In conventional inductors, the coil is wound around the core which in turn has one or several air gaps. This leads to a suboptimal thermal design. The Magchoke inductors has the coil in the center of the core material; in addition to this, the core material is soft magnetic and effectively has distributed air gaps. The distributed air gaps eliminate problems with fringing and hot spots.
The proprietary moldable soft magnetic material, SM²C® allows for a complete integration and thermal coupling between the coil and the core. The customizable winding technology and moldable core enable us to create a highly optimized inductor design, fully utilizing our superior low loss materials and a flexible production process.
Thanks to the geometry of the inductor and the distributed air gaps, peak currents can be allowed to be extremely high, and the saturation behavior is smooth. This gives great safety margin in applications with power electronics. In the figure below, a typical example is shown, exhibiting > 75% nominal inductance at 5x nominal current!
The inductance is frequency independent up to 100 kHz (see figure below), making the technology ideal for high-frequency applications such as active filter or active frond end inductors, dV/dt filters, and filter chokes.
Due to lack of magnetostriction, Magchoke inductors are very low noise – virtually inaudible. This also eliminates need for potting.
Due to the flexible core design, very compact liquid cooled inductors can also be designed using Magchoke technology.
