ADF Technology Helps Santa Margarita Water District Enhance Efficiency

Customer: Santa Margarita Water District
Location: California, USA
Industry: Water Wastewater Treatment
Installation date: 2023

Background

The Chiquita Wastewater Reclamation Plant, operated by the Santa Margarita Water District in California, faced the challenge of aging 18-pulse drives that no longer met their performance standards. To modernize their operations, they needed advanced technology that could enhance functionality and efficiency.

Challenge

Although no power quality issues existed within the facility, the existing drives were unable to handle decreased power quality from the grid, which was an important factor in the choice of solution. Comsys partner OneSource Distributors took a proactive approach and helped to facilitate a seamless transition to the new technology.

Solution

The customer had decided to replace the obsolete drives with new, off-the-shelf 6-pulse drives, which prompted the need for active harmonic filters. OneSource suggested the integration of two active dynamic filters from Comsys, an ADF P300-110amp unit and an ADF P300-220amp unit. By integrating ADF products, the customer achieved a more robust and efficient solution, ensuring reliable operation in their infrastructure. The 6-pulse drive with an ADF solution provides more flexibility in using off-the-shelf VFDs.

Result

The ADF products helped facilitate a seamless transition from their aging 18-pulse drives to advanced 6-pulse drive technology. Technically, the use of 6-pulse drives with ADFs enhanced the speed performance and guaranteed the system's capability to handle decreased grid power quality. The proactive approach ensured operational reliability and helped prevent potential downtime and high maintenance costs.

Economically, preventing these issues translates into cost savings by avoiding the expenses associated with unexpected repairs and extended downtimes. Overall, the integration of ADF products provided a more reliable and cost-effective solution for the customer's electrical infrastructure.

The customer was extremely impressed with the expertise of our partners. The education they received opened the door to future collaborations.
